Because Ovcharkas are extremely smart, strong-willed and independent they can prove difficult to train for obedience but not impossible. Prospective owners should take note: the breed is highly protective of their family and property, meaning without proper and early socialization it may be difficult to bring people into your home. These dogs are not recommended for inexperienced owners due to their assertive temperament and the need for a firm but fair approach to training.
Because the ovcharka's double coat is so dense it makes the outer coat weather-resistant and the thick undercoat a great insulator for colder climates. Coat colors can vary and include shades of gray, fawn, brindle, white and Red.
Russian Ovcharkas are fiercely loyal to their owners and exhibit unwavering dedication to protecting their loved ones. They possess a strong sense of territoriality and are quick to identify potential threats, which makes them excellent guard dogs. Their courage and fearlessness allow them to confront even the most formidable adversaries, making them highly effective in deterring intruders or dangerous wildlife. They are also known as wolf killers and will usually follow their prey until it is dead or at least no longer moving.
Due to their large size and energy levels, Russian Ovcharkas require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental well-being. Daily walks, playtime, and ample space to explore are essential for their overall health.
Proper grooming, including brushing their dense coat to prevent matting and the occasional nail trim, is necessary to keep them clean and comfortable.
